Description

Beef, onion & mushroom stir-fry over rice is a quick, flavorful dish made with tender beef strips, sautéed onions and mushrooms, and a rich umami sauce. Served over warm rice, it’s comforting, satisfying, and perfect for busy weeknights.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 oz mushrooms (button, cremini, or shiitake), sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated (optional)
  • 2 tbsp neutral oil (vegetable or canola)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • For the sauce:
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar or honey
  • 1 tsp cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup water or low-sodium beef broth
  • 1 tsp sesame oil (optional)
  • For serving:
  • Steamed white or brown rice
  • Green onions or sesame seeds (optional garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, brown sugar, cornstarch, water, and sesame oil. Set aside.
  2. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
  3. Add sliced beef in a single layer, season with salt and pepper, and sear for 2–3 minutes until browned. Remove from pan.
  4. Add remaining oil, then sauté onions and mushrooms for 5–6 minutes until softened and browned.
  5. Add garlic and ginger (if using), stir for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  6. Return beef to the pan and pour in the sauce. Toss everything together and simmer for 2–3 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  7. Serve hot over rice and garnish with green onions or sesame seeds if desired.

Notes

  • Add broccoli, bell peppers, or snap peas for extra veggies.
  • Swap beef with chicken or tofu for variation.
  • Add chili garlic sauce or red pepper flakes for heat.
  • Use hoisin sauce or rice vinegar for deeper flavor.
