Description

Black Forest waffles are a decadent breakfast or dessert inspired by the classic German cake, featuring chocolate waffles topped with cherry compote, whipped cream, and a drizzle of chocolate sauce. A rich and indulgent dish perfect for special occasions.


Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 1/4 cups buttermilk
  • 1/3 cup melted butter or vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 cups cherries (fresh or frozen, pitted)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for topping)
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp water (plus more for slurry)
  • Whipped cream, for serving
  • Chocolate sauce or melted chocolate, for drizzling
  • Chocolate shavings (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat waffle iron and lightly grease.
  2. Whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar in a large bowl.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat eggs and mix in buttermilk, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
  4. Combine wet and dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  5. Pour batter into waffle iron and cook according to manufacturer’s instructions.
  6. For cherry topping, combine cherries, sugar, lemon juice, and 2 tbsp water in a saucepan. Bring to a simmer.
  7. Mix cornstarch with a little cold water to form a slurry, then stir into the cherry mixture. Cook until thickened.
  8. Serve waffles warm topped with cherry compote, whipped cream, chocolate sauce, and optional chocolate shavings.
