Ingredients

  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk or buttermilk
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Optional: 1 cup chocolate chips or chopped chocolate

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F (160°C). Grease and flour a loaf or bundt pan generously.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3–4 minutes.
  4. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, then stir in vanilla.
  5. Alternate adding the dry ingredients and milk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with the dry. Mix until just combined.
  6. Fold in chocolate chips if using, then pour batter into prepared pan and smooth the top.
  7. Bake for 55–65 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Cool in the pan for 10–15 minutes, then turn onto a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Notes

  • For deeper flavor, use Dutch-process cocoa powder.
  • Add 1 tsp instant espresso powder for a mocha twist.
  • Top with chocolate ganache or a dusting of powdered sugar for presentation.
  • Bake in mini loaf pans (30–40 minutes) for individual portions.
