Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20 preferred)
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 egg
- 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
- 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 2 cups beef broth
- 2 tbsp flour (for thickening)
- 2 tbsp butter or oil
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- Optional: fresh parsley for garnish
Instructions
- In a bowl, combine ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Shape into 4 patties.
- Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook patties until browned on both sides and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
- In the same skillet, melt butter and add sliced onions. Cook until golden and caramelized, about 8–10 minutes.
- Add garlic and flour. Stir and cook for 1 minute to form a roux.
- Slowly whisk in beef broth. Simmer until gravy thickens, 5–7 minutes.
- Return hamburger steaks to skillet. Spoon onion gravy over them and let simmer for 3–5 minutes.
- Serve hot, garnished with fresh parsley if desired.
Notes
- Add mushrooms to the onion gravy for extra flavor.
- Stir in smoked paprika for a smoky twist.
- Use ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
- Top patties with Swiss cheese before serving for indulgence.
- Reheat gently with a splash of broth if gravy thickens too much.
