These hamburger steaks with onion gravy are juicy beef patties smothered in a rich, savory onion gravy, perfect for serving with mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.

  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 preferred)
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tbsp flour (for thickening)
  • 2 tbsp butter or oil
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Optional: fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Shape into 4 patties.
  2. Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook patties until browned on both sides and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, melt butter and add sliced onions. Cook until golden and caramelized, about 8–10 minutes.
  4. Add garlic and flour. Stir and cook for 1 minute to form a roux.
  5. Slowly whisk in beef broth. Simmer until gravy thickens, 5–7 minutes.
  6. Return hamburger steaks to skillet. Spoon onion gravy over them and let simmer for 3–5 minutes.
  7. Serve hot, garnished with fresh parsley if desired.

Notes

  • Add mushrooms to the onion gravy for extra flavor.
  • Stir in smoked paprika for a smoky twist.
  • Use ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
  • Top patties with Swiss cheese before serving for indulgence.
  • Reheat gently with a splash of broth if gravy thickens too much.
