Description

Old Fashioned Banana Pudding is a nostalgic Southern dessert made with layers of creamy homemade vanilla pudding, ripe banana slices, and vanilla wafers. It’s a comforting, crowd-pleasing treat perfect for gatherings or cozy indulgence at home.

Ingredients

  • 34 ripe bananas, sliced
  • 1 box vanilla wafers
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1½ teaspoons vanilla extract
  • Optional topping: whipped cream or meringue

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, whisk together sugar, cornstarch, flour, and salt. Gradually whisk in milk.
  2. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until thickened, about 8–10 minutes.
  3. In a small bowl, beat egg yolks. Slowly whisk in a bit of the hot milk mixture to temper, then return yolks to the pan.
  4. Cook for 2–3 more minutes until thick and creamy. Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla extract.
  5. In a dish or trifle bowl, layer vanilla wafers, banana slices, and warm pudding. Repeat layers, finishing with pudding on top.
  6. Cover and chill for at least 4 hours or overnight. Top with whipped cream or meringue before serving if desired.

Notes

  • Toss banana slices in lemon juice to prevent browning.
  • Substitute shortbread or graham crackers for vanilla wafers.
  • Add peanut butter or chocolate spread between layers for variation.
  • Make individual servings in jars or ramekins for portion control.
  • For a lighter version, use low-fat milk and omit topping.
