Ingredients
- For the casserole:
- 1 loaf French bread, brioche, or challah (cut into 1-inch cubes)
- 1 1/2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries
- 8 large eggs
- 2 cups milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/4 cup maple syrup or 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp salt
- For the streusel topping:
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup cold butter, cut into small cubes
- 1/4 cup chopped nuts (optional)
Instructions
- Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Layer half of the cubed bread into the dish, sprinkle with half the blueberries, then repeat with remaining bread and blueberries.
- In a bowl, whisk eggs, milk, cream, maple syrup (or sugar), vanilla, cinnamon, and salt. Pour evenly over the bread mixture.
- Cover the dish with foil and refrigerate overnight (or at least 30 minutes).
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). While heating, prepare the streusel: mix flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and cold butter using a pastry cutter or fingers until crumbly. Stir in nuts, if using.
- Uncover the casserole and sprinkle streusel topping over it.
- Bake uncovered for 45–55 minutes, until puffed and golden. Tent with foil if browning too quickly.
- Let rest 10 minutes before serving. Optionally top with powdered sugar or maple syrup.
