Ingredients
- 1 box white cake mix (plus ingredients listed on the box: eggs, oil, water)
- 1 box red gelatin (strawberry or cherry flavor)
- 1 box blue gelatin (berry blue flavor)
- 2 cups boiling water (1 cup per gelatin flavor)
- 1 cup cold water (½ cup per gelatin flavor)
- 1 tub whipped topping (like Cool Whip), thawed
- Patriotic sprinkles or decorations
Instructions
- Preheat oven and bake the white cake in a 9×13-inch pan according to package instructions. Let it cool slightly.
- Use the handle of a wooden spoon to poke holes all over the cake about 1 inch apart.
- Prepare red and blue gelatin separately using 1 cup boiling water and ½ cup cold water for each flavor.
- Spoon red gelatin over one half of the cake, and blue gelatin over the other half, allowing it to seep into the holes.
- Refrigerate the cake for 2 to 3 hours to allow the gelatin to set.
- Once chilled, spread the whipped topping evenly over the cake.
- Decorate with patriotic sprinkles before serving.
Notes
- Use homemade white cake if preferred, just ensure it’s light in color.
- Make a fruitier version by topping with sliced strawberries and blueberries.
- Substitute whipped topping with vanilla pudding or cream cheese frosting.
- Can be made in individual portions using cupcake tins or mason jars.
- Best made a day in advance for full flavor and texture.
