Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 4 slices cheese of choice (cheddar, Swiss, or pepper jack)
- 2 tbsp butter or oil for frying
- Optional: Worcestershire sauce, steak sauce, or hot sauce, to taste
Instructions
- Shape the ground beef into ¾-inch thick patties and season both sides with salt and pepper.
- Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and melt the butter or oil.
- Add the patties to the skillet and cook for 4–5 minutes per side, flipping once.
- During the last minute of cooking, add the sliced onions and garlic to the pan, stirring until softened and fragrant.
- Top each patty with a slice of cheese and cover the pan to melt the cheese for about 1 minute.
- Add any optional sauces at this time.
- Remove the patties from the skillet and spoon the onions and pan juices over them before serving.
Notes
- Use a higher fat ground beef for juicier patties.
- Add mushrooms or jalapeños for variations.
- Can be made ahead or frozen for convenience.
- Reheat gently with a splash of water or butter to retain moisture.
