  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: Serves 4–6

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced (optional)
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp mustard
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning or parsley
  • 1 loaf French bread or baguette

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook ground beef until browned. Drain excess fat.
  3. Add chopped onion and bell pepper (if using); sauté until softened.
  4. Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and brown sugar. Season with salt and pepper. Simmer for 5–7 minutes until thickened.
  5. Meanwhile, slice the bread lengthwise or into portions.
  6. In a bowl, mix softened butter with minced garlic and Italian seasoning. Spread evenly on the cut side of the bread.
  7. Place bread on a baking sheet and bake for 8–10 minutes, or until golden and fragrant.
  8. Remove bread from oven and spoon Sloppy Joe mixture generously over each piece.
  9. Serve immediately while hot and gooey.

Notes

  • Substitute ground beef with ground turkey or plant-based meat for a lighter or vegetarian version.
  • Add jalapeños or hot sauce for extra heat.
  • Top with shredded cheddar or provolone for a cheesy twist.
  • Store leftover meat in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze for 2 months.
  • Reheat in the oven for best texture; microwave if in a hurry.
