- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 yellow onion, finely chopped
- 1 green bell pepper, diced (optional)
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp mustard
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1/4 cup butter, softened
- 1 tsp Italian seasoning or parsley
- 1 loaf French bread or baguette
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook ground beef until browned. Drain excess fat.
- Add chopped onion and bell pepper (if using); sauté until softened.
- Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and brown sugar. Season with salt and pepper. Simmer for 5–7 minutes until thickened.
- Meanwhile, slice the bread lengthwise or into portions.
- In a bowl, mix softened butter with minced garlic and Italian seasoning. Spread evenly on the cut side of the bread.
- Place bread on a baking sheet and bake for 8–10 minutes, or until golden and fragrant.
- Remove bread from oven and spoon Sloppy Joe mixture generously over each piece.
- Serve immediately while hot and gooey.
Notes
- Substitute ground beef with ground turkey or plant-based meat for a lighter or vegetarian version.
- Add jalapeños or hot sauce for extra heat.
- Top with shredded cheddar or provolone for a cheesy twist.
- Store leftover meat in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze for 2 months.
- Reheat in the oven for best texture; microwave if in a hurry.
