Description
Warm, buttery apples simmered in a sweet cinnamon-brown sugar glaze. This comforting Southern classic is tender, flavorful, and perfect as a side dish or cozy dessert.
Ingredients
- 6 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons water
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
- Peel, core, and slice the apples into even wedges.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter until gently bubbling.
- Add the sliced apples and stir to coat evenly in the butter. Cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they begin to soften.
- Add brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and lemon juice. Stir well and let simmer as the sugars melt into a syrup.
- In a small bowl, mix cornstarch and water to create a slurry.
- Pour the slurry into the skillet and stir to combine.
- Cook for an additional 3–5 minutes, until the sauce thickens and the apples are tender but still hold their shape.
- Remove from heat and let cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- Use firm apples like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji for best texture.
- Add 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract at the end for extra flavor.
- A pinch of cloves or allspice adds deeper warmth.
- If sauce thickens too much when reheating, add a splash of water.
- Can be frozen for up to 2 months in an airtight container.
