Description

Black Magic Cake is a decadent, ultra-moist chocolate cake known for its rich flavor and deep dark color. Featuring layers of tender chocolate sponge paired with a creamy chocolate frosting, this indulgent dessert is perfect for special occasions or whenever you crave an intense chocolate treat.

Ingredients

For the Cake

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk, room temperature
  • 1 cup strong black coffee or hot water
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

For the Frosting

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 5 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans to prepare them for baking.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Mix well to combine all dry ingredients evenly.
  3. Combine Wet Ingredients: In another bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, coffee, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth and fully blended.
  4. Create the Batter: Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing gently until the batter is smooth and homogeneous without overmixing.
  5. Pour and Bake: Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Place in the oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Cool the Cakes: Remove the pans from the oven and allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then, turn the cakes out onto a wire rack and cool completely before frosting.
  7. Prepare the Frosting: In a large bowl, cream the softened butter until fluffy. Gradually sift in the cocoa powder and powdered sugar alternately with the milk, beating to a spreadable consistency. Add the vanilla and blend well.
  8. Assemble the Cake: Place one cake layer on a serving plate, spread a generous amount of frosting on top, then place the second layer over it. Frost the top and sides evenly with the remaining frosting.
  9. Serve and Enjoy: Slice the cake and serve it at room temperature for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • For best results, use freshly brewed strong coffee to enhance the chocolate flavor.
  • If you don’t have buttermilk, substitute with 1 cup of milk plus 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar; let it sit for 5 minutes before using.
  • Make sure all wet ingredients are at room temperature to ensure a smooth batter.
  • You can store the cake in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Bring cake to room temperature before serving if refrigerated.
