Ingredients
Brownie Batter
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 4 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons brewed coffee, cooled
Caramel Swirl
- 3/4 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
- 1 teaspoon instant coffee powder (optional, for enhanced coffee flavor)
Instructions
- Prepare the Brownie Batter: In a large bowl, whisk together the melted butter, granulated sugar, and cocoa powder until smooth. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract and brewed coffee. Gradually fold in the flour and salt until just combined.
- Prepare the Caramel Mixture: In a small bowl, mix the caramel sauce with the instant coffee powder, if using, to intensify the coffee flavor. Set aside.
- Assemble the Brownies: Pour half of the brownie batter into a greased 9×13-inch baking pan, spreading it evenly. Drizzle half of the caramel mixture over the batter. Pour the remaining brownie batter on top, then drizzle the remaining caramel sauce over it.
- Create the Swirl: Use a knife or skewer to gently swirl the caramel into the brownie batter, creating a marble effect without overmixing.
- Bake the Brownies: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the brownies for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out with moist crumbs but no raw batter.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the brownies to cool completely in the pan on a wire rack before cutting into squares. This helps the caramel set and the brownies firm up for easier slicing.
Notes
- For an even richer coffee flavor, use dark roast coffee in the batter and the caramel swirl.
- You can make homemade caramel sauce using brown sugar, butter, and cream if you prefer.
- Store brownies airtight at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for up to a week.
- Adding chopped nuts like walnuts or pecans can add a delightful crunch.
- Ensure not to over-swirl to maintain distinct caramel ribbons within the brownies.
