Description

These classic Sausage Rolls are a savory, flaky pastry filled with seasoned sausage meat, perfect for a delicious snack, party appetizer, or lunchbox treat. Crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, they are easy to make with simple ingredients and can be baked to golden perfection in under 40 minutes.

Ingredients

Pastry

  • 500g puff pastry sheet (thawed if frozen)

Filling

  • 400g sausage meat (pork or your choice)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried sage
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Finishing

  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Set the oven to 200°C (400°F) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare the filling: In a bowl, combine the sausage meat, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, dried sage, dried thyme, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated.
  3. Roll out the pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll the puff pastry sheet to about 1/4 inch thick, forming a rectangle approximately 30cm by 40cm.
  4. Form the rolls: Spoon the sausage mixture evenly along one long edge of the pastry. Carefully roll the pastry over the filling tightly to enclose the sausage meat, sealing the edges by pinching together or using a little water.
  5. Cut the rolls: Using a sharp knife, cut the long roll into smaller pieces approximately 5cm long.
  6. Apply egg wash: Place the sausage rolls onto the prepared baking tray, seam side down. Brush the tops with the beaten egg to achieve a golden color when baked.
  7. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown and the sausage filling is cooked through.
  8. Cool and serve: Let the sausage rolls cool slightly before serving warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • The sausage meat can be substituted with plant-based alternatives for a vegetarian version.
  • For extra flavor, add finely chopped fresh herbs like parsley or rosemary to the filling.
  • Sausage rolls can be frozen uncooked; simply bake from frozen by adding extra baking time.
  • Make sure the pastry remains cold before baking to ensure flakiness.
  • Serve with mustard or chutney for dipping to enhance taste.
