Ingredients
Produce
- 1 cup fresh spinach leaves
- 1 cup chopped kale leaves, stems removed
- 1/2 cucumber, peeled and chopped
- 1 green apple, cored and chopped
- 1 ripe banana
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
Liquids
- 1 cup cold water
- 1/2 cup ice cubes
Optional Add-ins
- 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup (optional)
- 1 tablespoon chia seeds (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Ingredients: Thoroughly wash the spinach, kale, cucumber, and green apple. Remove any tough stems from the kale and core the apple. Peel and chop the cucumber and banana into smaller pieces for easier blending.
- Add Ingredients to Blender: Place the spinach, kale, cucumber, green apple, banana, and lemon juice into your blender. Add the cold water and ice cubes to help chill and thin the smoothie.
- Blend Until Smooth: Blend all the ingredients on high speed until you achieve a smooth, creamy consistency with no visible chunks. This usually takes about 1-2 minutes depending on your blender.
- Adjust Sweetness and Texture: Taste your smoothie and if desired, add honey or maple syrup for sweetness and/or chia seeds for added fiber and texture. Blend again briefly to mix these in.
- Serve Immediately: Pour the smoothie into glasses and serve fresh for the best flavor and nutrient retention.
Notes
- Use organic produce when possible to reduce pesticide exposure.
- For a colder and thicker smoothie, add frozen banana slices or more ice cubes.
- Substitute water with coconut water for added electrolytes and a slight sweetness.
- This smoothie is best consumed immediately but can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 24 hours.
- To increase protein content, consider adding a scoop of your favorite plant-based protein powder.
