Description

Celebrate Halloween with these spooky and fun Graveyard Cupcakes, featuring rich chocolate cupcakes topped with creamy frosting, crushed cookies for dirt, and decorated with edible tombstones and creepy-crawly candy decorations. Perfect for a festive party or a playful treat for kids and adults alike.

Ingredients

Cupcakes

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup hot water

Frosting

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Decoration

  • 15 Oreo cookies, crushed (for dirt)
  • Chocolate or candy tombstone decorations
  • Gummy worms or candy spiders
  • Black and orange sprinkles (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  2. Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter and sugar on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Add Eggs and Vanilla: Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract until combined.
  4. Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients: Alternately add the flour mixture and buttermilk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Mix each addition just until incorporated.
  5. Add Hot Water: Carefully stir in the hot water; the batter will be thin but that’s correct.
  6. Bake Cupcakes: Divide the batter evenly into a prepared cupcake pan with liners, filling each about two-thirds full. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 18-22 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.
  7. Cool Completely: Remove cupcakes from oven and allow them to cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Make Frosting: In a bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, mixing well after each addition. Add heavy cream, vanilla, and salt, and beat until fluffy and smooth.
  9. Frost Cupcakes: Spread or pipe the frosting evenly over each cooled cupcake.
  10. Add Dirt and Decorations: Sprinkle crushed Oreo cookies over the frosting to resemble dirt. Decorate with chocolate or candy tombstones, gummy worms, spiders, and optional sprinkles to create a spooky graveyard scene.

Notes

  • For best results, use room temperature ingredients.
  • You can substitute buttermilk with 1/2 cup milk plus 1/2 tablespoon lemon juice or white vinegar, rested for 5 minutes.
  • Use a piping bag with a star tip for a more decorative frosting finish.
  • Store cupcakes in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to 4 days.
  • Let refrigerated cupcakes come to room temperature before serving for best flavor and texture.
