Description
Hasselback Potatoes are a visually stunning and deliciously crispy roasted potato dish characterized by thin, fan-like slices that remain connected at the base. This classic Swedish recipe turns ordinary baker’s potatoes into an elegant side dish with a crispy exterior and tender, buttery interior, perfect for any festive occasion or everyday meal.
Ingredients
Potatoes
- 4 medium-sized russet potatoes
Seasoning & Toppings
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 2 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely chopped (optional, for garnish)
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 425°F (220°C) to prepare for roasting the potatoes, ensuring a crispy exterior.
- Prepare the Potatoes: Wash and dry the potatoes thoroughly. Place each potato on a chopping board. Using a sharp knife, make thin vertical slices about 1/8 inch apart, cutting almost to the bottom but not all the way through to keep the base intact and create a fan effect.
- Insert Garlic Slices: Carefully place the thinly sliced garlic between some of the potato slices to infuse the dish with garlic flavor while roasting.
- Season the Potatoes: In a small bowl, mix melted butter and olive oil. Brush this mixture generously over the potatoes, making sure to get some into the slices. Sprinkle with salt and freshly ground black pepper evenly over each potato.
- Roast the Potatoes: Place the prepared potatoes on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or foil. Roast in the preheated oven for about 45-60 minutes, or until the potatoes are crispy on the edges and soft inside. During roasting, occasionally brush the potatoes with any remaining butter mixture for extra crispness and flavor.
- Add Cheese and Final Touches: If using Parmesan cheese, sprinkle it over the potatoes in the last 10 minutes of roasting to allow it to melt and create a golden crust. Once done, remove the potatoes from the oven and sprinkle with freshly chopped parsley if desired.
- Serve: Serve the Hasselback potatoes hot as a beautiful and tasty side dish to your favorite main courses.
Notes
- Choose firm, medium-sized russet potatoes for best results; they hold their shape well and become crispy.
- Be careful not to cut all the way through the potato slices to maintain the classic Hasselback shape.
- You can experiment with additional toppings like bacon bits, cheese blends, or herbs for added flavor.
- Hasselback potatoes can be prepared ahead by slicing and soaking in water to prevent browning; pat dry before seasoning and roasting.
- If you prefer a softer interior without as much crispness, reduce the cooking time slightly or cover the potatoes for part of the roasting.
