Description
Homemade churros are a delightful Spanish treat featuring crispy, golden fried dough sticks dusted with cinnamon sugar. Crispy on the outside and tender inside, these churros are perfect for dipping in rich chocolate sauce or enjoying on their own as a sweet snack or dessert.
Ingredients
Dough Ingredients
- 1 cup water
- 2 1/2 tablespoons sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
Frying
- Vegetable oil, for frying (about 2 quarts)
Coating
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough: In a medium saucepan, combine the water, sugar, salt, and 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat. Once boiling, remove from heat and immediately stir in the flour until the mixture forms a ball of dough.
- Heat the Oil: Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet or frying pan to 375°F (190°C). The oil should be deep enough to allow the churros to float and cook evenly.
- Pipe the Churros: Transfer the dough into a pastry bag fitted with a large star tip. Carefully pipe 4 to 6-inch long strips of dough into the hot oil, cutting with scissors or a knife as you go.
- Fry the Churros: Fry the churros until they are golden brown and crispy, about 2 to 3 minutes on each side. Fry in batches to prevent overcrowding.
- Drain Excess Oil: Using a slotted spoon, remove the churros from the oil and place them on paper towels to drain off excess oil.
- Coat with Cinnamon Sugar: Mix the cinnamon and sugar in a shallow bowl. While the churros are still warm, roll them in the cinnamon sugar mixture until fully coated.
- Serve: Serve the churros warm, optionally with a side of melted chocolate or caramel sauce for dipping.
Notes
- Use fresh oil for frying to ensure crispy churros without off-flavors.
- You can make churros ahead and warm them briefly in the oven to refresh crispiness.
- For a gluten-free variant, substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend suitable for frying.
- Be cautious when frying; maintain oil temperature to avoid soggy or burnt churros.
