Ingredients
Chestnuts
- 1 pound fresh chestnuts
- Water, for soaking
Salted Maple Coffee Butter
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
- 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
- 1 teaspoon freshly brewed strong coffee, cooled
- 1/4 teaspoon flaky sea salt
Instructions
- Score the Chestnuts: Using a sharp knife, carefully cut an ‘X’ on the flat side of each chestnut to prevent them from bursting while roasting and to make peeling easier after cooking.
- Soak the Chestnuts: Place the scored chestnuts in a bowl of water and let them soak for about 30 minutes. This helps soften the shells and facilitates roasting.
- Roast the Chestnuts: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Drain the soaked chestnuts and arrange them on a baking sheet in a single layer. Roast for 20–25 minutes until the shells curl back at the scored edges and the nuts inside are tender.
- Peel the Chestnuts: Remove the chestnuts from the oven and cover them with a clean kitchen towel for 10 minutes to steam. While still warm, peel off the outer shell and thin inner skin carefully to reveal the edible nut.
- Prepare the Salted Maple Coffee Butter: In a small bowl, combine the softened butter, maple syrup, brewed coffee, and flaky sea salt. Mix thoroughly until smooth and creamy.
- Serve: Arrange the peeled chestnuts on a serving platter and accompany them with small dollops of the salted maple coffee butter. Enjoy the chestnuts warm to experience the rich melding of flavors.
Notes
- Choose fresh chestnuts that are heavy and firm without mold or shriveling.
- Scoring chestnuts is essential to prevent them from exploding while roasting.
- The soaking step is optional but recommended to ensure easier peeling.
- Use freshly brewed strong coffee for the butter – espresso or dark roast works best for depth of flavor.
- Serve chestnuts immediately after peeling for the best texture and flavor.
- Any leftover butter can be refrigerated and used as a flavorful spread on toast or pancakes.
